MESSOR BARBARUS COLONY (HARVESTER ANT)
Messor barbarus, often called the Harvester Ant, is an excellent choice for beginners. These ants are unique because they primarily eat seeds, making them one of the easiest species to feed. However, they have specific needs regarding humidity to keep them healthy.
What you will get:-
1 Queen + 5 to 10 workers
(Free Seeds)
Here is a practical care guide covering everything from their first days as a queen to a fully mature colony.
🌿 Colony Maintenance: Daily & Weekly Care
Once your colony has 20+ workers, you can connect them to a proper nest and outworld.
Requirement Recommendation Why it matters
Temperature 26°C – 28°C (Nest) Speeds up brood development. Avoid direct sunlight.
Humidity Nest: 50-70% (wet side)
Outworld: 30-50% (dry) The dry area is vital to prevent their stored seeds from rotting .
Nest Type plaster, or acrylic They chew through soft materials, so ensure is in glass/plastic .
Feeding Constant seeds + Weekly protein Provide a variety of seeds (canary, millet, sunflower) and occasional insects.
💡 Note on Substrate: Messor barbarus love to dig. Providing sand or soil is great enrichment, but if you add too deep a layer, they might dig their nest there and disappear from view .
🍽️ The Unique Diet of Harvester Ants
Unlike most pet ants that rely on liquid sugars, these ants are granivores (seed eaters).
“Ant Bread”: They do not eat seeds whole. Workers chew the seeds into a paste called “ant bread,” which they then feed to the larvae .
Sugar is a Snack: While they primarily eat seeds, keepers report they still enjoy nectar or honey water as a personal treat, though they don’t share it via trophallaxis (mouth-to-mouth feeding) like other species .
Treats: They go crazy for walnuts and roast chicken, which are excellent high-protein treats for a growing colony .
🧹 Maintenance & Cleaning
The “Messy” Factor: Messor barbarus are naturally dirty. They smear their oily waste on the glass. Do not clean this off with chemicals. In nature, they use these oils to waterproof their nest and mark territory .
The Rubbish Pit: They will pile seed husks and dead ants in a corner of the outworld or a specific chamber. Remove this pile with tweezers every few months to prevent mold mites .
🚫 Common Mistakes to Avoid
Overfeeding Protein: Too many insects can cause the colony to reject seeds. Seeds should make up 70% of their diet .
High Humidity: Do not mist the entire nest. If the whole nest is wet, the seeds will germinate or rot, starving the colony .
