DIACAMMA RUGOSUM (ASIAN BULLET ANT)
Diacamma Rugosum is one of the most unique and intelligent species in the ant-keeping hobby, often recommended for experienced keepers looking for something beyond the typical queen-centric colony. Unlike almost any other ant, they have no queen; instead, a single mated worker called a gamergate leads the entire colony. Diacamma Rugosum is native to the tropical forests of Malaysia and other southeast Asian countries. These ants are impressive hunters with a powerful sting that they use to paralyze prey. While they don’t leave long pheromone trails like other ants, they use a fascinating method called tandem running to recruit nestmates to large food sources. They are known for being very active and curious, constantly exploring their environment. Provide a good amount of space and a naturalistic setup with substrate and climbing opportunities.
Caution: Be aware that workers possess a potent sting. It is not medically significant to most people, but it is reportedly quite painful, similar to a strong wasp sting. Handle with care, especially during cleaning and feeding.
